Ed Martin Series Rides

Index page for the Ed Martin Series Rides folder

The Ed Martin Memorial Series is a series of weekday mid-morning rides. Cyclists of all ages and experience are welcome and invited to join DBC members. No rider is ever left behind.  The rides run every weekday throughout the year. Check the Club Ride and Event Calendar, or contact the ride leader, to make sure the ride you plan to join will take place. Sometimes ride leaders will alter their regular route due to weather conditions or other circumstances.  If you plan to join a ride en route, make sure to check with the ride leader, and be prepared for the chance that you may not meet up with the ride.

All Ed Martin rides start at Starbucks on Lyndell Terrace.

Ed MartinThe series is named for longtime DBC member Ed Martin. Ed was a DBC member for nearly 30 years. During that time he was the consummate volunteer: he led rides; designed the first Oregon tours; served on the DBC Board in various capacities, most notably as Safety Director; organized Bicycle Safety Programs in conjunction with the Davis Police department at all of the Davis elementary schools; served on the City Safety Commission for many years; took over the Over the Hill Rides after Ed Delano died and then grew the series from one to two days weekly; volunteered for every Double Century and Foxy's fall century when he was alive; and was an active community member in his church and various other community organizations. He also visited DBC members when they were ill or hospitalized.

After his death, the DBC Board of Directors voted unanimously to rename the "Over the Hill Gang" rides to the "Ed Martin Memorial Series" rides as a lasting way to memorialize Ed and his contribution to cycling, DBC, and the greater Davis community. The DBC Board recognized Ed's wife, Ruth Martin, by granting her honorary lifetime membership in the DBC.

In addition to all of the above, he was a wonderful friend to all who knew him. The photo of Ed Martin on this page was taken on one of his Oregon tours.
